Correcting the Problem through Generational Learning to Health

2024 was the year of revelation and change for me. I learned so many lessons and am grateful for them all. The biggest one is the one that is necessary for the longevity of life. Health is wealth, as many always say. And though this may be true, the true wealth is knowing the history of the health of the ones that came before you in order to correct the problem so the issue doesn't continue with you and through you. This revelation came to me during my own health crisis in the middle of the last quarter of the year, in the midst of everything in my life being transformed to no end.

Last year, I was diagnosed with PCOS(Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) and I was completely in shock. A couple of years before then the doctors found a tumor in a pituitary gland which caused me not to produce enough estrogen. Over the years, these diagnoses have caused much of my weight gain and the stress of it all was more than I could handle. With PCOS, there are many complications with the syndrome including infertility and irregular menstrual cycles. For awhile, I was struggling with this health issue and it caused a lot of insecurity within me about what I wear and how I see myself. After my breakup and walking away from my job, I made a conscious decision to go back to the gym and start working on my health. Every other day I would run on the treadmill and start lifting weights. After a month in a half, I started seeing results and felt really great. I stopped taking my birth control (which was prescribed to me to help manage some of the symptoms from PCOS) and started adding in more vitamins within my daily routine. Everything was starting to look up, but then I discovered something new.

What I discovered was that some of the issues of my health were directly connected to my genetic makeup of all the women who came before me. Interesting enough, it never dawned on me to ask questions from the elders in my family of what ran through my bloodline. One day, I was speaking to my great aunt on the phone about an injury I had from working out. We talked more about the injury and I disclosed to her the reason behind me working out a lot was for me to start managing the PCOS. I explained to her about my weight gain. She explained to me that it was common for the women in our family to start having issues with their health in connection to weight gain. After our conversation, I had some time to think. I realized over the past year, my friends and I have all had health issues that were related to what our mothers and grandmothers also had with their health. An epiphany happened, some of the health issues I was having was genetically connected to the women in my family before me and it was essential to discover what worked for them in order to correct the issue.

Correcting the problem with not only my physical health but also my mental health became important to me. Many of us, as we get older, are discovering many mental and physical issues that have been knowingly and unknowingly passed down through the family. However, correcting the issue may or may not have been a priority for those in the past. For me, managing my weight and PCOS, through healthy eating and working out was important to me. It was important because it directly impacted how I felt about myself, treated my self, handle my health and more. Now, looking at the health history of the women before me, I can now take control of my life by managing my stress, eating more vegetables, moving my body with cardio, relaxing and taking more vitamins, and with these continuous actions, it can peacefully help the generations after me. This is what I want and desire for my own future daughters. Learning from the past directly impacts the future.

For my future, I see myself in a much healthier and happier space. Praying to God and understanding His will for my life is essential. It is also essential to understand my health, my genetic make up and what I can do in order to get myself in a healthier position in life. You can't stop everything from happening to you but you can do the things that you are in control of. If you have the option, I would suggest for you to talk to the elders in your family to know what health issues run in the family. For some people, stress opens up the door for all health problems to take over and for others it could just be a lack of nutrients that may affects one's body. Others may deal with more spiritual stuff like alcoholism and mental disorders. It is never too late to take note and start doing what you can now to address the problem and get it handled for the future and the generations that come after you.

Remember, health is wealth!

Love,

CA.....HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
